MAY News!

In May, OPAL transitions to a monthly format for its newsletter, so watch for publication on the first of every month. Members, please make note of this change as you send us news of your activities and events.

OPAL’s Spring II classes get underway on May 9th, so hurry and REGISTER this week! Be aware that member registration now requires a login and password, which current members should have received via email in early April. If you are having trouble with your login information, please contact the OPAL business office for assistance during gallery hours, M-F 1:00-5:00 pm, or email us at: oakparkartleague@gmail.com

Up next in the OPAL gallery is our Places & Spaces exhibition, an open call show for all media and interpretations of landscapes, cityscapes and interiors.  “Places that Inspire” will be the topic of our CRITIQUE on Monday, May 16th and Jackie Lakely will open the session with a presentation of her recent artist residency at Sumburgh Head Lighthouse at the southern tip of the Shetland Mainland in northern Scotland. Artists are invited to bring a work in progress or finished work that expresses place and/or space as source(s) for inspiration.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming IDEA SLAM on Tuesday, May 17th at 7:00 pm in the OPAL gallery.  If you have any burning ideas about what might make OPAL more exciting, we invite you to bring them to the Idea Slam. Participation from Artist Members is especially encouraged, as we are looking for feedback on exhibitions and programs.  Your input will help us shape OPAL’s future as we begin planning for our centennial anniversary in 2021.  Hope to see you there…pizza will be served!

Artists have been communicating ideas about their surroundings since the cave paintings of Lascaux. This includes the natural and built environment, and the constructed & deconstructed world. Artists may choose to idealize, exaggerate, distort or edit views of these spaces and places in the way that best communicates the thoughts, concepts, mood or meaning behind a given piece of artwork. The Oak Park Art League invites artists to submit up to 3 works of art that convey their interpretation of these Places & Spaces. All work must be original (painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, mixed media or photography), created within the last 3 years and not exhibited at OPAL in the last 18 months.
