July Hemingway events at the Oak Park Art League!

The Oak Park Art League celebrated Ernest Hemingway with exhibitions, a book discussion and a series of writing events, as our historic Carriage House Gallery doubled as a Writers Salon during the month of July!

July 8 - August 5: Moveable Feast Exhibition

Opening Reception July 8th, 7:00-9:00pm

OPAL's "Moveable Feast" main gallery exhibition called for work inspired by the life, travels and writing of hometown author and literary giant, Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway lived large and his experiences and novels provide vivid themes for artists to explore: World War I, Paris cafes, Cuban culture, Spanish bullfighting, African safaris, Key West fishing, horseracing, artists, authors and poets, food and good whiskey. The Art League’s historic Carriage House Gallery and the Moveable Feast exhibition were a venue for visiting Hemingway Scholars in Chicago during the International Hemingway Conference, hosted by the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park.

July 8 - August 5: Grace!

Ernest Hemingway’s mother Grace Hall Hemingway painted lush landscapes and stark desert scenes, country roads and beloved places. A tireless supporter of arts and culture, Grace was an active member of the Oak Park Art League for nearly two decades in the 1930's & 40's and served as a Board Director for six years. A selection of Grace's work were on display in conjunction with the Moveable Feast exhibition.

July 8 - August 5: ARTifact Invitational - "Farewell to Arms"
	The Oak Park Art League’s ARTifact Invitational merges the study of historical artifacts with contemporary art-making practice; the selected artist creating original works that are inspired by and form a dialogue with objects, ornament, or architecture found within the historic Village of Oak Park.
Oak Park artist Margot McMahon launched this initiative in conjunction with OPAL’s Hemingway exhibition. Through her body of drawings, paintings and sculpture, Margot created a non-violence statement in her portrayal of a youthful Ernest Hemingway as he was writing “A Farewell to Arms”. A bond of man and machine, Margot’s Hemingway sculpture engaged with a Corona #3 typewriter*, the same model used by the author in the early 1920’s; Corona #3 a gift from his first wife Hadley in 1921.

Moveable Feast Book Discussion

Hemingway’s Moveable Feast is a memoir detailing the author’s years in Paris; the City of Light sparking the writing of Hemingway and other literary luminaries. The book and title inspired OPAL’s exhibition theme and artists were encouraged to take up this enjoyable read to inform creativity. A lecture and discussion of Moveable Feast were facilitated by David Seleb, Executive Director of the Oak Park Public Library in the Oak Park Art League gallery on Monday, July 11, 2016 from 7:00-8:30pm.
