Principles of Oil Painting - Free Workshop

In this workshop we will be using still lives to learn about the essential principles of painting. We will delve into the components of art, and the principles of design and narrative. Students will be challenged to create meaningful, engaging paintings with the knowledge they gain in our class.

Gabriel Soto graduated from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2017 with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts. Focusing on oil painting, Gabriel has experience painting a wide range of subject matter.

Materials list:

The materials list below is only a loose guideline for what you should have. You can get everything on it, or just a few items. If you already have paints, brushes, and canvases, you're free to use what you already have.

Paints:

You can buy whatever paint brand you can afford. I recommend that you buy Gamblin. It’s made in the US so it’s very high quality paint for an affordable price. I’d personally stay away from Winsor and Newton. It’s expensive and has been very runny paint in my recent experience with it. If you’re just starting to explore oil painting and don’t want to commit too much money, you can get BLICK art studio paint. It’s good for our purposes as we learn the essentials.
Here are the colors you should get:

Titanium white (get a big tube)

Mars Black

Venetian Red

Indian Red

Yellow Ochre

Naples Yellow

Ultramarine Blue

Cerulean Blue

Cadmium Red

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Yellow Medium

Lemon Yellow (or any light yellow)

Brushes:

Brushes can get expensive once you begin to buy them in a large number. I recommend that you buy sets of cheap brushes, if you don’t have brushes already. You can find them in Dick Blick Art Supplies. You can buy about 12 brushes in one kit. We’ll need primarily hogs hair brushes.

Oil and paint thinner:

Get a small bottle of cold pressed linseed or safflower oil from any brand. OPAL will provide the paint thinner and rags.

Canvases:

with these, I recommend canvas boards. You can buy several for very little money. I recommend you get about 3 boards, each measuring about 16”x20”. You can go a little bigger or a little smaller.
