A Painting a Day- Wednesday 1:00pm - 4:00pm

A Painting a Day
Instructor: Kathy Hirsh
iPad friendly class

A painting is the marriage of composition and color. First, take control of the picture plane with black, white, and gray, concentrating on design not detail.  By slowing down in the planning phase you can play with color and allow yourself to paint spontaneously and freely at the easel. Learn to make your painting exciting from 3 inches or 30 feet.

There's a real benefit to painting many small works rather than a couple of large ones.  With every painting you work on your composition, brushwork, values (lights and darks), and color mixing.  Working small keeps it fresh and lively.

In this class we’ll be painting still lifes or working from photos. Concentrating on important basic drawing skills and learning to see shape, value, edges and color.

Beginners will be using a limited palette. Using a limited palette can be oddly liberating, you go home with a painting that is united and harmonious, it gives you the opportunity to really learn about color mixing, color temperature and value.  My more advanced students will be working with a more extended palette (don't get too excited it's not that extended).

We will also spend some time talking about photos and how to use them for a painting. I do believe that it's best to work from life but I know that photography is a tool that can be well used, but there are pitfalls to watch for.

I think of learning to paint and draw as a spiral of skills and knowledge. The topics are the same whether you are a beginner or an experienced painter, you just bring a changing set of abilities to the concepts.  I'll be doing demos with each class and there is lots of personal attention at your easel. This is an iPad friendly class.
