This is an introduction to the basic concepts of observational drawing, suitable for beginning students as well as those with some working experience who want more in-depth exposure to these fundamental concepts and practices. Methods introduced in this course will serve as a foundation to all observational drawing as we utilize still life and focus on line quality, exploring the form and character of both. The course will cover a gestural approach to layout, measuring proportions and basic perspective and progress through an investigation of the “surface information” that gives forms and objects their individual qualities.

This course will be followed by “Drawing Fundamentals Part 2: Tone” in the next session, which will carry these ideas forward into tonal rendering.

Instruction will be tailored toward the progress of each student and the course will be adjusted according to class need. Returning students will have the chance to further develop their own individual work and abilities.
