Whether you are experienced or trying out mixed media for the first time, working in black and white can be very helpful in clarifying understanding principles of value, strong composition, differences, and the juxtaposition of loud and quiet conversations in your artwork. In this workshop we will explore various techniques using acrylic paint, collage, pens, crayons, gesso, and different tools of application to discover possibilities of richness and depth, positive and negative shapes, intuition and control, and expansion and contraction. We will work with the value scale in black, white and shades of gray, on small and large sheets of paper (your own board or canvas, too, if you like). This workshop is about experimenting and process so the end goal is not necessarily beautiful works of art to take home but rather glimpses of techniques and ideas you will take with you to your work moving forward.

This class is recommended for students with some experience in drawing and painting, but all are welcome, beginning to advanced artists. You are also welcome to work realistically or abstractly or somewhere in between. Please see the attached supply list for materials to bring with you.
We will take a half hour break from 12-12:30 so please bring your own lunch.
